Our Social Project

IMG_0127Andean Land Peru is an organization that is committed to improving children’s basic nutritional needs. Our vision is to improve the nutritional standards of school lunches so that children can focus on their learning rather than their hunger.  We have realized this committment by focusing on improving the food access and food security in two rural schools in the community of Upis. The final outcome and our dream is to see more students completing their studies successfully and developing new employable skills.

This project began as a partnership with the U.S. based The Link School and Andean Land Peru (ALP) back in 2013. With the support from the project’s commited partners: Bobby & Natalie Lewis (Principles, Link School); Gary Fleener (Teacher, a good friend and coordinator of our programs with the schools and colleges in the United States.); foreign exchange students, Upis’ Elementary school students and their parents, all have worked hard to make this project a success. The construction of a community organic greenhouse  in the elementary school has made it possible to produce a variety of produce including: greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, radishes, strawberries and aguaymanto (golden berry).

Social project 3Over the last two years there has been increased support from the U.S. and Canada for our project.  In 2015, Cleone Todgham, a Canadian biologist, expressed interest to support this type of initiative. Within a year, Cleone and her friend Lois Sharpe, were able to raise funding from their local Rotary Club based in Port Moody, British Columbia.  These funds have helped to finance the construction of a second organic greenhouse for the high school.

Social Project 4This greenhouse project has a strong educational component as it will eventually become a small training centre for students who will undertake the management and operations of greenhouses. It will also offer training specific to production, industrialization and commercialization of artisanal fruit products (i.e. marmalades, dried fruit, etc.)
